deregulation of financials was the major cause of the current problems.

If greedy banks didn't have the option of giving out shit mortgages, packaging them with good ones to get an "investment grade" label, selling them, *and* using credit default swaps to bet against what they just sold... we wouldn't be talking about any of this right now.
