But by that point the Ultimate Versions you liked...most of them were dead and sales of Ultimate books were plummenting

They hard rule they had in the Ultimate universe was if you're dead, you're dead.
They killed Logan, Peter and a few others and by that point there is at least 10+ years of continuity that was crushing the Ultimate books. You had characters you could never use because they were dead and the replacements just didn't catch on except Miles
