If you’ll indulge my sentimentality for a moment, one benefit of rehearsing for our Christmas concert in a few weeks is learning more than just the first verse of familiar carols. -- (edited)

The fourth (third in our arrangement) verse of It Came Upon a Midnight Clear has spoken to me a lot, recently, and not just because of the gorgeous choral setting of it we get to sing:

For lo! The days are hastening on,
By prophet seen of old
And with the ever-circling years
Shall come the time foretold
When peace shall over all the earth
Its ancient splendors fling
And the world send back the song
That now the angels sing.
