I think an offsite backup of humanity is a great idea. But building a self-sustaining space colony is an utterly insane amount of complexity.

Best case, there would be generations where it was still totally dependent on earth.
One nice thing about reaching for such a far off goal, though, are the ancillary innovations that arise along the way. Eminently patentable and exploitable.
It is dangerous for humanity to have him be the one benefitting from that.
