The rule exists so that clubs don't overspend their means so as to get a competive advantage.
As a fan, we did make some big money spends (big for us, not like Chelsea bug) uh, poorly and so failed to make competetive gains (my commentary). We started construction on a new stadium more or less right in time for Covid and thus losing all in person revenue.
But hey, we turned over our books, we didn't have super inflated naming / sponsorship deals from the country / nation state / kingdom that owns us, the numbers added up to what they are.
