My answer is that he knew he would lose. By refusing to cooperate and just getting summary judgment against him he could do exactly what he did . . .

have a press conference saying everything he said is true and he never had the opportunity to prove it in court so he can play victim and still play to the MAGA crowd for funding. Might have been able to do that even if he produced the discovery and lost, but that would have cost him more money too when he knew he had no case.
