that’s the “investigation” piece zeit’s link pulls from - it somehow misses this has been reported on and discussed almost since announcements of

closures.

at least some of the stores, maybe all, did have higher crime at various points; so target started having to have more items locked up, etc., and that contributed to lower sales at the relevant locations, so fewer thefts had more impact, too.

there can also be a big difference in actual crime numbers and reported, with police not always making it easy to report/not always taking action. see the linked article for one reference.
