In order to (presumably) maintain a fair and competitive landscape, the EU limits money that governments can inject into EU airlines.

I don't know all the rules, I just know that's the general concept.
Since 1973, the flag carrier of the small island EU nation of Malta has been Air Malta. This airlines keeps losing money. The Maltese government wanted to inject more money into it, but the EU did not approve.
Thus, Air Malta will shut down on March 30, 2024.
And on March 31, 2024, a new airline called KM Malta Airline will begin flying. Using the same planes. And presumably the same employees.
I'm not sure I get the difference?
