I've watched a lot of Christmas movies over the last 48 hours. I feel Die Hard holds up more than most.

Sure, there's the smoking and McClane's reaction to being kissed by a guy at the Christmas party, but it's a reflection of the time. The same can be said about Scrooged where everything you see in that office is one huge HR nightmare. That's just the 80s for you.

Some movies are absurd if you just scratch below the surface (I'm looking at you, Home Alone). Even among Die Hard movies, I don't know if I could ever be bothered to watch any of the others, except for maybe the 3rd one (Die Hard with a Vengeance).

I've had a good movie watching Christmas, and that's even though I've removed Love Actually from my rotation. I'm wrapping up the night with a performance of the Nutcracker by the New York City Ballet. The story's goofy but the music is fantastic.
