I had a decent day today. You know how Beth Harmon played in grand hotels in glamorous cities at the end of Queen's Gambit?

Yeah, that is me too.

I started out competing in the Idaho Chess Association Happy New Year Fundraising Tournament. It was at the Melba Senior Center in Melba, ID at the corner (I crap you not) of Base Line Road and Potato Road.

I have mixed feelings about the results today. The bummer is the top three finishers got medals and I came in fourth. The upper is fourth is my best tournament finish by far.

I lost the first game to the second highest rated player there by running out of time on the clock. I then won the next three in a row by checkmate to finish 3-1 for the first time ever. My last opponent said the sweetest thing to me: he called me "relentless".

My biggest mistake of the day was not charging my phone last night. I used Waze for the first time and it got me to Melba, thank goodness. But the battery died leaving Melba and I had no idea how to find the restaurant I wanted to eat at in Kuna.

So I took off in a north-easterly route and eventually ran into the southern end of Boise. I found Cole Road which leads to Twin Peaks, Regal Edwards Cinema and an exit to I-84.

I had fried pickles and fish and chips, hot coffee and water at Twin Peaks. I arrived in time to see Wyoming win the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl over Toledo with a field goal as time expired.

I then drove across the street to the movies. I'd wanted to see the prequel to Ford vs. Ferrari but it didn't start for over an hour. I bought a ticket to Poor Things as it started in 15 minutes.

I have to say, I had no intention of watching Poor Things but now that I have, it goes on my years best list. I'll give it 8 out of 10. The art direction and cinematography got a little too precious for my taste at times. I thought it dragged in the Paris chapter. However the script and especially the actors were superlative.
