DFW inhabits a character like no other, and he gave himself a wide variety of characters to inhabit here. It's a lot to keep track of. I took some notes, but I know I still missed a lot. Some people immediately jump into a re-read, which would reveal a lot you missed.
There is no handholding, so much is left to the reader to make inferences and connections. It is fun, and keeps you on your toes. The writing is so good.
