That, much like relegation, is a system that probably only works in that sport.

For one thing, I don't think it works if you don't have a large pool of teams. Probably not great if there are byes, either. Definitely doesn't work with teams that play for a chance to host a playoff game.
It would work for things like the nba in season tourney. It doesn't work for playoffs for major American sports.
It sounds like it could be fun in something like the ncaa tourney, but things could go really poorly. You could have a first round match-up of the two top teams, the winner of which must run a gauntlet of all high seeds. Meanwhile on the other side you could have a team ranked about 30 make it to the finals while never being an underdog. Then the finals are what you normally get now from a top seed first round game.
