In response to "I have a question based on watching Finding Your Roots. How is he being treated there?" by Peglegpete

He was the head of the North-West Mounted Police detachment sent to stop the (American!) whisky trade, and generally treated First Nations fairly.

Founded a couple forts to stop all y’all coming across the border with your firewater. Was commissioner of the NWMP (which later became RCMP), and generally set the tone for relations with First Nations in the west. He’s still quite well-regarded by First Nations, thought being he treated them fairly and openly, and fought for them while Ottawa generally screwed them.
