Thing is, it's not just the air temperature you have to worry about. Your furniture, walls, drapes, carpets, woodwork--all retain heat.

Which is why it's better to keep one running on "auto" and about 78 degrees than to turn everything off in the morning or if you're going to be gone all day. It has to work that much harder to get everything down to a decent temp, that means the condenser is running constantly and sucking the juice.
This is one of the little things I learned growing up Southern. Also, it doesn't matter if you're using a heat pump/exchanger, a fee standing central air unit, window units or a portable--touch your walls. If they feel warm, the a/c has to work extra hard.
We didn't even really need our a/c here until early last week (and for some reason, we've actually got some humidity--56%, normally we stay below 10% so the heat's easier to take) but we've had it on ever since. Temps have run from 95 to 107. But in 5-6 more weeks, we'll be back to 70s in the daytime and 40s at night. :)
