It ebbs and flows. I think now the quality is more largely host driven than at some other times. It's really hard what they do though.

It seems like there are episodes where there are multiple good sketches and episodes where ther are... not. If it was based on the cast, I would expect the good sketches to be more spread out across episodes, so I think right now a lot has to do with what the host brings to the table.
I think last night was an indication. I like Jacob Elordi but SNL is not the best venue for him. He's an actor and based on the episode I assume he's used to showing up and "just" acting. The cast seemed to latch on to "he's hot" and built several sketches around that premise. The opening monlogue was the first clue. I think the monologue is where the host gets the most freedom. When it consists of a "question and answer session" with the audience where the cast does the work, it's probably not a good sign.
I was actually expecting a Q&A monologue but I though Barry Keoghan would "unexpectedly" be in the audience and they would do a Saltburn stalker bit.
