backboarding for MDH. I've been to Santiago and Buenos Aires but more than 10 years ago, so my advice is probably a bit dated for specifics.

Santiago was nothing special when I was there, but I hear it's a fair bit nicer now. Food was bad, couldn't find a decent coffee to save your life, but had Some nice museums. Best part was probably going to Valparaiso for the day.
Buenos Aires was nicer. Way better food, generally hipper place, didn't have to worry about street crime. Amazing restaurants, especially if you like beef. Find a good steakhouse, and have your meat done as the chef chooses. Will probably come medium well to well done - which is not normally how I'd go - but it was always amazing anywhere in the country.
also you can probably get a cheap flight to Easter Island from Santiago, which I thought was totally worth it for a few days.
