I agree that the drama is fun, and it can have a larger effect. I just don't see it as an affront to democracy.

The point of primaries now is to be able to say "We had a healthy debate and your voices have been heard. Now it's time to rally and support the nominee." Maybe you get a few items into the party platform as well.
There can be an impact in the general election if your party members feel excluded from the process and become disillusioned. It doesn't take a huge percentage to make a difference if they choose to protest vote a third party or stay home in the general.
