Because their margins were large enough to allow it. You want a company to have that flexibility.

Ford and GM can't make the same cuts without losing money per vehicle in EVs. Heck, as of November GM was still selling EVs at a loss. Great when you have ICE sales to help offset that, but it isn't sustainable and they have little flexibility to meet market demands for pricing.
