Agreed. They can both be right. And it's not like Gates' response comes from nowhere. There is a long history of racial profiling in this country.

The fact that he jumped to the wrong conclusion doesn't change the that he likely has experienced the same situation where his assumption was correct. The way to change those perceptions is to be more circumspect in the use of that power when the situation arises. Had they not arrested him the blame would be one sided, but here, even though racial profiling was not the motive, they still acted precipitously and the moral high ground gets much fuzzier.
