my cousins kid (30s) is in some local bands and advises me this about going indie for sxsw, if that’s a route she might be open to

1. Local bands DO try to play during SXSW but it’s kind of a band to band decision if they wanna deal with the hassle if they don’t get an official showcase spot. Unsurprisingly, the younger bands are usually way more into doing the like 14 shows all over thing than people my age 😂.
2. I do have experience doing the SXSW thing. The thing is it’s hard to say if it’s a “good” time to gig cuz I personally don’t think it’s a lot of work that doesn’t really materialize into tangible fans etc unless you either play like 30 shows unofficially OR you’ve got an official showcase.
3. It’s fairly easy to get unofficial shows and they’re happening EVERYWHERE in the city.
4. The official showcase is actually pretty restrictive though in the fact that they don’t let you play unofficial stuff etc etc.
5. If she’s never done something like this she for sure should cuz even though jaded cynics like me don’t think it’s worth it, it’s very cathartic to be around all these other artists etc .
