you'd be surprised how deep the upgrades go. Main cabin benefit is you get your cash back. If you are ok with the airline just giving you a credit then go with that option. Your status gets you seat selection and boarding group as well as bag privileges.
Specific to AA the fare class is what counts for the mileage earned. Loyalty points = dollars is all you need to know.
