Tonight I watched one of the deftest shivs I've ever seen be wielded by a 5th grader.

Tonight I was reading 30+ 5th Grade essays and 1 Sixth Grade essay for a Lions Club contest. The top 3 in each grade won either a $75, $50, or $25 gift card and got passed on to the District round.

The theme was "Together we can...". One 5th grade essayist focused on "together we can achieve goals". Let us call the essayist's teacher Mr. X

One paragraph started out "Even Mr. X probably has goals and together we can work to help Mr. X achieve his goals maybe but there are just some people who will never achieve their goals."

Ouch

Only one sixth grader submitted an essayist so she automatically got the $75 gift card. She didn't address the topic of together we can. She wrote all about "I can do this to improve things". And she wrote a lot about how much she loved the library and would work to make it even better.

One of our group suggested that since she missed the topic, we give her the $75 but not send the essay on to District. I successfully argued that "oh yeah, that is going on to District"
