I thought about those two a lot. They are "superfans" and they've spent every minute trying to moneyball/come up with game scenarios that they forget "life happens" and not everything can be accounted for. So much book smarts, and so little street smarts.
They panicked when they got lost. And they hadn't practiced for that, and they collapsed and didn't know what to do.
