If somebody cares about you enough to tell you when they think you're in a bad place emotionally, that's a true sign of friendship.

Go back and watch those scenes again. The writers want people to know what a total fucking trainwreck this dude is. His friends are dying, and his natural response is a drug-fueled threesome in the desert. He's Burning Man as a person.
