My first thought was why didn’t they drop anchor, but then remembered a documentary I saw about container ships and how the anchor only works best if

there’s a necessary depth of sand on the sea bed for it to anchor into. Given it’s a river crossing, probably not enough sediment and mostly rock, negating its effectiveness.
