LYC: I know there's the human aspect and thank goodness for the collision being late a night but I keep seeing Truss vs Container Ship

and thinking of how engineering optimized both and the design considerations for each absolutely did not cover the case where they would interact with each other.
Oh, and just the physics of it. Lots of mass, no matter how small an acceleration = lots of force.
So you've got this truss bridge which is a tried and true design and on some level kind of magical. Really strong for a relatively small amount of materials. Spreads the load out over the complete span. Deals with dynamic loads really well.
The container ship is designed to carry a very large amount of super standardized container from Port A to Port B. Relatively efficient at cruising in the open sea for an insane amount of mass. Given the large mass, not real maneuverable.
So the bridge is designed to withstand varying levels of forces on the deck and to some lateral forces from the wind.
Along comes this out of control container ship which hits the bridge in a way that it absolutely wasn't designed for and the graceful, low material design ends up across the ship and in the water.
