In response to "We once spent an afternoon at the Hungary/Austria border when our group leader and his wife had picked up the wrong passports and were" by Meg

"you mean we need our passports to cross borders?" in middle school we once smuggled a kid to Spain on a school trip.

we were on the train from Zurich to Barcelona when one of the kids realised he didn't bring his passport. half the time in the '90s they wouldn't even open them leaving Switzerland by train, just some customs guy would get on at one stop, vaguely look at everyone's passport covers, and get off at the next stop. we just gave the customs guy a stack of all the passports along with someone's Swiss foreigner's ID, which was the same size and shape, and gambled that at most he'd just count the people and number of passports in the stack. don't think anyone ever lost gambling on the laziness of French border guards.
