I have heard of a couple of airlines doing this. I think it's a neat concept.

You aren't assured that you'll have option (depends on full the flight is). But if the flight isn't full and you want a little extra space, it's (depending on price) a win-win for you and the airline (a bit of extra revenue for them, some extra space for you)
