They did cut him loose. They didn’t come back for a week or two when his polling showed no one gave a shit.

That’s should have been the klaxon for Hillary that they saw a path to win still. Remember, Paul Ryan was saying vote your conscience after that tape hit.
Then it shifted because the voters didn’t care.
