I'm not looking to be cheap. I assume I just donate, yes?
Responses:
A large part of the British Museum's funding comes from government (unlike the Met, which is almost all private donations)

I give something small when I go to a local museum and pay the recommended amount when I visit a museum in another city.

Less than 10% of the Met's revenues are from government - it's overwhelmingly from private gifts, admission, endowment etc

We "suggest" a $5 donation. Seems it has to do with the non-profit status. We can't charge admission. -- nm
