You bid for shifts that lined up for the programs on offer. So, you'd bid for the Jewelry Show at 9pm-11pm, or the Electronics Show from 1am-3am.

The shifts pay was different, and extremely convoluted, and eventually led to a class action.

I'm not suggesting all call center work is like that, but, it's not encouraging.
