A few ideas. -- (edited)

I've heard Knoxville is a fine, fine place to leave. Or wherever those STers recommend nearby.
Portland is lovely (and crash is not wrong), but if you were thinking of moving up here, I'd actually recommend Eugene, Corvallis, or the 'burbs. And I know plenty of folks in all of those places if you want to connect to some locals to explore jobs or housing or something.
My niece's baby-daddy works for H.E.B. in one of the San Antonio suburbs (Castroville, I think). Dunno if talking to him would help you, but I can put you both in touch with each other if you want to chat with them.
However, they are also talking about moving back to Peoria -- which is a perfectly cromulent city with an eclectic and growing queer community. And I might be moving back there myself, too, in a few to several years.
Oh! And the advantage of being in Oregon versus Texas (or Florida): Running off to the North Pole. Freezing to death on an ice floe is much better than being eaten by alligators.
