winter olympics were niche until 1988 at the earliest. that was the first big tv deal in a North American prime time time zone.

there were like 1000 athletes and they lacked a lot of the support staff they have now. plus it wasn't as big a ceremony, so way fewer hangers on. -- nm

the highest elevation in the Adirondacks is only around 5k ft, which for downhill racing etc i'm surprised they could put together Olympic-level runs -- (link)
