Here's some thoughts at first glance, but I can keep giving it some thought.

Sweet Home Cafe: The cafeteria at the African American Museum is supposed to be pretty good, and gets good reviews from the Post writer.
Central: Fantastic fried chicken. One of the best restaurants in that area of town.
Jaleo: Jose Andres (DC loves him) classic restaurant. Spanish tapas.
Zaytinya: Jose Andres Mediterranean. This place is great.
Old Ebbitt Grill: Classic DC. Oldest restaurant in town. Will be packed, because it is always packed.
The Hamilton: Same owners as Old Ebbitt. Fun restaurant and it's huge so they usually have space.
Rasika: Some reviewers have called it the best indian in the United States.
The Wharf: The other direction than the rest but you can get some crab and seafood from the seafood market.
When are you in town again/what's the itinerary?
