I was hassled by the authorities in Russia more than anywhere except China, and I had a giant beard in China, everyone thought I was Muslim, and it was when the Uighur crackdowns were starting.

so pawn in a global political game? yes!
horribly treated by Russia? for sure!
totally predictable outcome for foreigners in Russia? damn straight!

Id put Russia up there with Saudi and the Emirates on the list of "places that have rule of law until you get on someone's bad side"
