In response to "ooooo - how did that go? was it relaxing and awesome? -- nm" by Pippy Shark

Eminently so! -- (edited)

Getting away from screens for a while was great enough on its own, and also getting out of the city. The abbey was a bit different than the last time I visited about 6-7 years go -- and they have opened a coffee shop, which was wonderful.

The Benedictine hosts were just what you'd expect, too. I was the only person there on a "solo retreat." The abbey was also hosting a retreat solely for Catholic women, and there were two smaller groups from churches around Oregon. Got to hang out with one group for a bit; they were revising and updating their Sunday school and CCD programs.

Had some interesting conversations over dinner with a few ladies from Seattle -- all of them immigrants from Kenya. That was fascinating. One of them had the unmitigated gall (sarcasm) to say "No one talks about abortion in Kenya. We're too worried about feeding the children we have." That did not go over well with the table next to us (the only other people I heard bring up Harrison Butker the entire weekend).

We ended up chatting a few different times over the weekend, and hearing about their experiences in both American and Kenyan churches was eye-opening.

And going through the Liturgy of the Hours again was certainly an experience.

If y'all ever do come to Oregon on a trip, I'll take you down there.
