Corn is a grass that needs a high nitrogen fertilizer, they were using more energy to grow the corn than getting ethanol to use. Not even considering the desiel to plant water harvest transport and then distill.
The price of fertilizer shot up, 3rd world nations faced famine and sparked the Arab spring that set off several Civil wars and or brutal regimes.
