you’re not terrible (as I think you really know). I would suggest a plan to visit them when they’re back, then they can tell you all about their trip. -- (edited)

along with telling them that you’re sorry to have to miss; but you’ve already booked to the small details with your kids, and it’s a once in a lifetime chance before they’re all out of the house, partnered, etc.
I know it still is tough and feels sucky, sorry about that.
