In the Dreamtime, when the world was still young and forming, Tiddalik the Frog awoke with an unquenchable thirst. Desperate to satisfy his parched throat, he began to drink and drink, and as he did, he consumed all the water in the land. Rivers dried, lakes vanished, and the land was left barren. The other animals soon realized the severity of the situation—without water, they would perish.
They held a great meeting to decide how they might make Tiddalik release the water. After much discussion, they concluded they must make him laugh. Various animals tried their best tricks and antics, but nothing seemed to amuse the enormous frog. Finally, the wise old owl, known for seeing the world from a different perspective, called upon the eel Ngarrindjeri.
Ngarrindjeri slithered, twisted, and contorted himself into the most bizarre and ludicrous shapes. The sight was so absurd that Tiddalik couldn't hold back any longer. He erupted into a gigantic, uncontrollable fit of laughter, and in doing so, he released all the water he had swallowed. The rivers, lakes, and creeks filled up, and life once again flourished across the land.
This story reminds us of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of using wit and wisdom to solve problems, crucial lessons that resonate even in our modern lives.
