George is heavily involved with the show.

the version of the story we saw last night he approved of.

the version we knew up to now was written by the maesters and slanted to their agenda. The dragon fight at the end of season 1 is a good example.

What we see on HOD is in many ways clarifying a lot of the maester version of events we knew in the past, to fact and canon.
