Look for a single letter. It will always be A, not I. So if you start spinning the dial and that letter is going Z..Y..X..,then you're spinning in the wrong direction.

As far as I can tell, the detective mode button doesn't do anything other than apply a different algorithm. Same concept. So if it doesn't work one way, press the button and try it that way.
