Daily Myth for June 18

Once in the ancient times, in a land where the earth embraced the horizon in magnificent plains, a clever boy named Yamanba lived with his poor family. Yamanba’s family struggled daily, with the harsh seasons leaving their crops barely enough to survive.

One day, an old man appeared at their door and, seeing their plight, offered Yamanba a challenge. The old man handed him a small, seemingly insignificant clay pot and said, "Return this pot filled with water seven times, and I shall reward you with a gift beyond measure."

Accepting the old man's challenge, Yamanba hurried to the river. However, each time he filled the pot and took a single step, all the water miraculously emptied, leaving the pot dry by the time he returned. Frustrated, he sat beneath a great tree, contemplating his next move.

From the shadows of the tree, an elderly woman emerged, her eyes gleaming with wisdom. She spoke in gentle tones, "Young Yamanba, the pot you carry is enchanted and cannot be filled with water alone. Look deeper.”

Following the woman’s advice, Yamanba examined the pot closely and noticed intricate carvings on its surface – a series of interconnected symbols that seemed alive. Realizing that the symbols might be a form of instruction, he carefully traced them with his finger while muttering prayers taught to him by his ancestors.

Astonishingly, the pot began to fill with water by itself, and this time, the water remained even after he took his step. Returning to the old man seven times, he triumphantly presented the filled pot.

The old man, pleased with Yamanba's insight and perseverance, revealed his true nature as a powerful spirit of the land. With a wave of his hand, the spirit transformed Yamanba’s humble home into a bountiful haven, with fertile fields and a river that never ran dry.

Yamanba became a legend in his village, known not for just his cleverness, but for his readiness to seek wisdom from the world around him. And thus, the tale of Yamanba and the enchanted pot was passed down, teaching generations the value of insight, perseverance, and reverence for the living traditions and spirits of the earth.
