Katy, TX principal: "I'll take a pajama day any day because the children are the most covered they’ve been all year long..."

Katy ISD principals oppose a proposal to ban pajamas from the school district's dress code, saying such a rule could hamper fun incentives or spirit weeks with little benefit, a district official told the board of trustees Monday.

A 2024-25 dress code proposal for the district's board of trustees had recommended banning pajamas from schools, but a committee from the district pushed back.

At Monday’s board work study meeting, Sherri Ashorn, Katy ISD Director of Student Affairs, presented a proposed Discipline Management Plan and Student Code of Conduct for the upcoming school year with a recommendation that pajamas remain acceptable as part of the dress code.

As it was a work study meeting, no vote was taken on the item, but board President Victor Perez questioned why pajamas would continue to be allowed.

The district recommended keeping them, Ashorn said, because principals and administrators requested that pajamas stay within the dress code.

“Through some principal feedback and conversations with school leadership, we found that any pajamas that we found that were inappropriate or offensive could be covered under (other dress code) categories,” Ashorn said. “Sometimes pajamas are used as an incentive or as part of some sort of spirit week… and so it felt a little contradictory to have those types of days while also focusing on trying to identify what part of pajamas are the problem.”

Board member Rebecca Fox agreed with the district’s recommendation, noting that fewer dress code violations are reported for children wearing pajamas.

“I have principals who tell me, ‘I'll take a pajama day any day because the children are the most covered they’ve been all year long, and they're fun; they're comfortable,’” Fox said. “(Principals) don't have as many referrals for dress code.”
