Daily Myth for June 24

In the Dreamtime, there was a young girl named Wunajbin, who lived with her family by a river deep in the outback. One day, while her family was out hunting, she wandered away from camp and ventured into the bush. She stumbled upon a small, shimmering pond nestled between two ancient gum trees. The water was so clear that she could see the pebbles at the bottom glistening like tiny jewels.

Drawn to the sight, she knelt down to take a closer look, and suddenly, the water began to ripple. As she watched in awe, the ripples formed into the shape of a large water serpent, the Rainbow Serpent, whom her people called Wogal. The Rainbow Serpent spoke to her in a gentle yet powerful voice, telling her that she had a special connection to the water and the creatures within it. He granted her the ability to communicate with the river's inhabitants and to call upon the rain whenever her people needed it.

Overjoyed by this gift, Wunajbin hurried back to her camp to tell her family about her encounter. From that day on, she used her powers to help her tribe, summoning the rains to nourish their crops and ensuring the river always provided an abundance of fish. The people revered Wunajbin, and they honored the Rainbow Serpent for his generosity.

But Wunajbin’s gift also came with a responsibility. The Rainbow Serpent warned her to always respect the balance of nature, never using her powers selfishly or without careful thought. Wunajbin took this to heart and taught her people to live in harmony with the river and the land, passing down the wisdom of the Rainbow Serpent through generations.

And so, Wunajbin’s legacy lived on, reminding all who heard her story that the gifts of the Dreamtime carried with them the weight of duty and respect for the natural world.
