Are we talking about instances like these?

-- there is the infamous comment about "poor children" being just as smart and capable as "white children"

-- he once commented that he was "able to get along with segregationist senators" and that some of them would call him "son" and not "boy"

-- something about the Obama administration going "into the hood" that is Detroit

-- there was an event around literacy a few years ago where he said something about "black parents are unable to read or write" sufficiently to teach black children
