Steve Phillips, the GM at the time and now an MLB Radio/Network guy says the deferred money gave them the payroll flexibility to trade for Mike Hampton, who helped them get to the World Series in 2000 (and was NLCS MVP). When he signed with Rockies after the season, citing the “great Colorado school system” (which will never not be funny), the Mets got a compensation pick for losing him in free agency and that pick became David Wright, the most beloved homegrown player in franchise history.
