local: donairs, of course. You should be aware of the ... effects they can have on the uninitiated.
good places to eat: Studio East (Asian fusion), Henry House (pub, oldest continually operating restaurant in Halifax), Maxwell's Plum (pub in a haunted ex-whorehouse), 2 Doors Down, Brooklyn Warehouse, Salvatore's pizza, Auction House (unassuming pub) Pickford & Black, The Lower Deck (which also has a harbour side pub which is the best people watching spot in the city), The Old Triangle (Celtic music evenings), Antojo's Tacos, Buta Ramen, Quinn's, Truly Tasty ramen, La Frasca, Bicycle Thief (Italian, $$$$), Pizza corner (Grafton & Blowers) if you want to make tasty bad decisions, also there are cool shops around that area.
