I would, when exiting, hold the door for the next person but "wait" until they actually grab door before exiting ahead of them.

I'd be opening the door for them but not "holding the door open" for them.
Open, pause, look back, they grab door, I continue.
It also their responsibility to close the door as they are the last out.
Not sure this makes sense but it's what I do. It's not like I'm out to dinner with my wife....
