Following up on something I posted here around when my daughter played SXSW and her devastation at not being able to see Jai Paul at Pitchfork here,

an update.

First an overly long (sorry) recap. My daughter has been obsessed with Jai Paul's productions since she heard them about 10 years ago when his first album was leaked online (he didn't actually release it until 6 years later and was so shook by the experience and losing control of his music that he became somewhat of a recluse). He's why she became interested in producing and not just writing and performing. She was also a big fan of his brother AK Paul. Together Jai and AK started the Paul Institute which is essentially a sub-label of XL Records. In any event, we've often joked that her whole career has been inching closer and closer to them. One of their artists was also a graphic artist who did the artwork for my daughter's first EP. She cold emailed the publishing company that ultimately signed her because she liked Fabiana Palladino who is on the same publishing label and has a record deal with the Paul Institute. Anyway Jai played the first live show of his career at Coachella this year and his second was at Pitchfork this past weekend. Fabiana played with him at Coachella and planned to play here as well and when we met her at SXSW she invited us to come to the show, but the show was on the night of my daughter's best friend's pre-nuptial dinner and she couldn't do both. She was devastated. Ultimately Fabiana had another show to play and didn't come here. But while my daughter was in London in May working, Fabiana played a show and my daughter got to meet and hang out with AK Paul backstage for a while after. She was thrilled (also in no small part because she has social anxiety but she said they really got along well, had a long fun and interesting conversation and she didn't make a fool of herself).

So finally to the update (sorry again). About a week or so before Pitchfork she messaged AK Paul on instagram to see if she could offer any suggestions for them while they're in Chicago. The night before the show he messaged her back and asked if she was coming to the show. She said she was devastated that she couldn't but would love to meet up afterwards if they had time. He messaged back later inviting her (and her boyfriend) to meet them at an arcade pub after the show. They went and she got to meet Jai Paul (and had a nice conversation) and hang out most of the evening with AK Paul. She texts me "I think we're actually like friends now?" He told her to let him know when she's back in London (and that he wants to come back here) and then told her that he listened to her album and really liked it. He asked her to send him more music she's working. No idea if this will lead to anything, but she is on cloud 9 right now.
