Apparently people really started gaming the system over the past several years based on youtube and tiktok 'influencer' videos.

seat saving, lying about waiting on someone, etc.
Apparently this wasn't a major problem for the longest time but has become one more recently.
The lack of assigned seat is the reason I have flown Southwest very few times over the years, and not in many years
(Also, I rarely find Southwest to be any cheaper than the other airlines despite their reputation of being cheaper. On the flip side, they fly a lot of routes/city pairs that other airlines don't so you can get a lot of non-stops only on Southwest)
